Barrier properties Imerys minerals reduce permeability of plastics for films and packaging, biopolymers, recycled plastics and WPC

Highly lamellar minerals such as talc and mica create an effective barrier for air or liquid transmissions in plastics compounds. Generally speaking, the more lamellar the mineral the better the barrier properties.

The performance of these minerals in barrier applications will depend on aspect ratio, mineral particle orientation in the polymer and mineral addition rate. The particle size of the mineral selected will depend on material thickness:  thin film for example, will require a finer mineral particle size.

Imerys highly lamellar minerals are particularly recommended for improving barrier properties in:

  • Polyolefin film for food packaging applications
  • Injection molded and blow molded packaging
  • LDPE / EVA agricultural film used for greenhouse applications
  • Biodegradable film
  • Biopolymers and recycled plastics
  • Wood plastic composites

Depending on the thickness of the film, we recommend our Suzorite® mica, HAR® and Jetfine® talc products for enhancing barrier properties in plastic film applications.
